Reiki FAQs

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese name consisting of 2 words Rei and Ki meaning ‘Spiritually Guided life Energy’, (commonly known as Universal Life Energy), an energy which animates, & is found around us all.

Reiki is a Japanese technique of spiritual healing using "Universal Life Energy", which is channeled through the practitioner to the recipient. Reiki is for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing via channeling that energy to someone for the purpose of healing.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady, and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
How does Reiki work?

Reiki is administered by the "laying on of hands", and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us, and is what causes us to be alive. If one's ‘life force energy” or Chi/Ki is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress. If it is higher, and balanced, then we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki involves the transfer of ‘Spiritually Guided Energy’ from practitioner to patient to enhance the body's natural ability to heal itself through the balancing of energy. Reiki utilizes specific techniques for restoring and balancing the natural life force energy within the body. It is a holistic, natural, hands-on energy healing system that touches on all.
What is a Reiki Treatment?

You relax fully clothed, on a massage table, or seated while the healer holds his hands on or above you. Although there are a few positions in which the practitioner is in contact with the patient (such as cradling the head), most Reiki treatments do not involve actual touching of the patient's body.

The practitioner holds his or her hands a few inches or farther away from the patient, and then allows the ‘Spiritually Guided Energy’ to flow wherever it is required, with the recipients body identifying the need(s), thereby catering to it/them by drawing the energy as needed. Thus, the individual being healed takes an active part in the healing process as opposed to having a passive part in spiritual healing.

A treatment can last an hour or longer depending on the treatment required. In the western world many practitioners use the standard hand positions and commonly a full treatment is given covering all the important organs of the body. There is no pressure on the body making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions.
What does Reiki feel like?

Reiki energy can normally be felt as a warmth or coolness, tingling, or waves in the body. It will be different for each patient, and usually for each treatment, doing/being what it needs to at that particular time. However, there are times when neither the patient, nor the practitioner is aware of any sensations. But the Reiki energy has a mind of its own, and still works regardless.

Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing and soothing experience, and it is not at all unusual for the patient to actually fall asleep during their treatment, only to awaken to feeling totally relaxed, and refreshed.
NOTE: For those dealing with deep emotional issues, do not be alarmed if tears are shed by the patient during their treatment. This can be a very moving experience, and tears are a way of shedding old pains, clearing blocks & helping to make way for better ‘energy’ flow, thereby furthering the healing process

What can Reiki accomplish?

Reiki is an effective healing method that can be used for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues of any kind, (past and present), and it gives wonderful results. Reiki helps to harmonize body, mind and spirit for yourself or anyone you want to help.

When the flow of the "Life Force Energy" is disrupted, weakened or blocked, emotional or health problems tend to occur. Imbalances can be caused from many situations occurring in our lives, such as: emotional or physical trauma; injury; negative thoughts and feelings; (including fear, worry, doubt, anger, anxiety); and self-negative talk. Toxicity, nutritional depletion, destructive lifestyle, and un-healthy relationships. Neglect of self, lack of love for self, or others, and from emotions that are not expressed in a healthy way, etc.

The body is more than just a collection of functioning parts, and organs. Since everything generates on a frequency, the body and its organs have their own energy fields which are continually changing. All conditions of disease are rooted in this energy system. If our "life force" is low or blocked, we are more likely to get sick. But if it is high and flowing freely, we can maintain our health and well being.

Reiki detoxifies, and assists the body to heal on its own. It raises the vibrational frequency of the body, helping spiritual growth, and emotional clearing/healing. This in turn helps the mind & body to be healthier, and happier.

If used with conventional treatments, & surgeries, often recovery time is decreased, and the benefit of the therapy being used by the patient increases. Other natural therapies such as meditation, crystals, aroma therapy, etc., are also reinforced, complemented, and enhanced Reiki healing complements Eastern and Western medicine and everybody can benefit from it. It is beneficial to the health of men, women, & children. Other wonderful uses are animals, plants, food, etc.

Reiki healing energy is a tool for use at any moment, any time, any where for on-the-spot stress release, pain relief and quick energy. Long term practice of whole-body Reiki helps restore the general condition of the body. It opens the energy channels, allowing the body to deal properly and naturally with stress and built-up toxins, thereby being better able to cope with stress and depression.

Reiki Healing Energy provides means to balance the human energy fields (Auras) and energy centres (Chakras) to create conditions needed for the bodies healing system to function.

The Reiki practitioner must be a clear vessel through which the healing energy flows. He/She plays an instrumental part in the healing process, but ultimately it is up to the healee to manifest harmony and balance in their own life.

What Reiki is NOT

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not, because Reiki comes from a holy, albeit sacred source. No matter what ones personal beliefs may be, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with their spiritual, or religious self, rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development, and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

While Reiki is NOT a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.
The History of Reiki

It is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols for universal healing energies. Various healing systems, which crossed many different cultures, emerged from this single root system. Unfortunately, the original source itself was forgotten.

Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan, rediscovered the root system in the mid- to late 1800s. He began an extensive twenty-one-year study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders. He also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system which activate the ‘Universal Life Energy’ for healing.

Usui then underwent a metaphysical experience and became empowered to use these sounds and symbols to heal. He called this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death around 1893.

The tradition was passed through several grandmasters of Reiki such as Dr. Chujiro Hyashi, Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.

There are many forms of Reiki being practiced now. The two principal ones are: "the Usui System of Natural Healing" and "The Radiance Technique." The Usui System of Natural Healing balances and strengthens the body's energy, promoting its ability to heal itself.

Reiki was introduced to the Western world in the mid-1970s. Since then its use has spread dramatically worldwide.
How long does it take for results?

Reiki healing usually brings about slow, gradual improvements over a period of days and weeks. With conditions that have been present a long time, it may take months until maximum benefits are achieved. While occasional healing "miraculous" cures have been reported, these are relatively rare.

It is up to us to cast off old habits and patterns in our life and to accept healing and change. It is very important for everyone to "think positively".

Sometimes people have unreasonable expectations of Reiki healing. It does not often bring an instant cure of any condition. Reiki works with you to restore energetic balance and repair things like blockages and unbalance in the energy field which create disease and unhappiness. This can take time, especially if the illness has been in the body for awhile. It is best when having a treatment to have no expectations except to be open to having the treatment, and allow it to work as it will.

It is important to understand, that "healing" is not always the same as "curing". Once again our mindset (positive) makes a considerable difference in the outcome of what may happen. Illness is usually a message from our body to take notice, something is not right in our lives. Are we going in the right direction? Do we need to learn something? Forgive someone? Bring more joy into our lives? Release old memories? Make a healthy life change? Love ourselves more?

Ultimately if we want healing to be permanent, we must take responsibility for healing the cause. Reiki healing can help with this by allowing you to approach the changes in a calm, relaxed manner, aiding you to let go of negative thoughts and attitudes. It can bring about greater self-awareness and your capacity to love yourself and others, and can connect you with the the Divine. Reiki can transform your life in so many beautiful ways, if you simply open up, and allow it in.
